2028 ජනවාරි මාසයේ සිට අලුතින් නිකුත් වන PlayStation ක්රීඩා සඳහා Sony සමාගම Discs නිෂ්පාදනය කිරීම නතර කරන බවට කල නිවේදනයත් සමග Gaming Industry එක යම් ආන්දෝලාත්මක තත්ත්වයකට පත්වුනා.
කෙසේනමුත් මෙම තීරණයට එරෙහිව කැනේඩියානු PnP Games හි නියෝජිතයෙකු විසින් Change.org හරහා ‘Don’t Kill the Disc’ නමින් පෙත්සමක් ආරම්බ කර ඇති අතර එයට දින 4ක් වැනි කෙටි කාලයක් ඇතුළත අත්සන් 100,000 කට වඩා ලැබී ඇති බවට තොරතුරු වාර්තා වේ. Game Disc එකක් යනු තමන්ට සැබැවින්ම අයිති දෙයක් බවත්, එය ලබා දීමට, විකිණීමට හෝ එකතු කර තබා ගැනීමට හැකි බවත් එම පෙත්සමේ සඳහන් වනවා. නමුත් Digital Game එකක් යනු ඕනෑම මොහොතක සමාගමට අවලංගු කළ හැකි Digital License එකක් පමණක් බවයි ඔවුන් පෙන්වා දෙන්නේ.
මේ අතර, ඔස්ට්රියාවේ Thalgau හි පිහිටි දිනකට Disc 600,000 ක් පමණ නිෂ්පාදනය කරන Sony Disc නිෂ්පාදනාගාරයේ සේවකයින් 300 ක් පමණ මේ වන විටත් නැවත පුහුණු කර, වාහන Micro Optics නිෂ්පාදනය වැනි වෙනත් අංශ වෙත යොදවා ඇති බව වාර්තා වනවා. එහි ප්රධාන විධායක නිලධාරී (CEO) Dietmar Tanzer පවසා ඇත්තේ 2028 වන විට ඔවුන්ගේ Disc නිෂ්පාදන ධාරිතාව 10% දක්වා දැවැන්ත ලෙස පහත වැටෙනු ඇති බවයි.
එමෙන්ම Microsoft සමාගමේ මීළඟ Xbox කන්සෝලය වන Project Helix ද , Disc Drive එකක් නොමැතිව නිකුත් වනු ඇති බවට තොරතුරු වාර්තා වේ.
Following the recent announcement that Sony will halt the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028, the entire gaming community has been thrown into turmoil.
In response to this decision, a Change.org petition titled ‘Don’t Kill the Disc,’ initiated by a representative of the Canadian platform PnP Games, has garnered over 100,000 signatures in just 4 days. The petition highlights that a physical disc represents true ownership—allowing gamers to lend, trade, or collect it. In contrast, they point out that a digital game is merely a digital license that can be revoked by the company at any time.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Sony’s disc factory in Thalgau, Austria, which currently produces about 600,000 discs daily, is already retraining its 300 employees for other sectors, such as manufacturing vehicle micro-optics. Dietmar Tanzer, CEO of Sony DADC, stated that their disc production volume is expected to plummet to just 10% by 2028.
Analysts point out that this is clear evidence the upcoming PS6 console will likely not feature a disc drive. Similarly, Microsoft’s next Xbox console (Project Helix) is also reportedly set to launch without a disc drive.
